NOTE from Sheldon,
webmaster@mnseabees.org If you make contact with old friends,
shipmates, or whomever maybe you could drop us an e-mail telling us about it.
We do often wonder if this guestbook is effective in reuniting people.
I have found and reunited many Seabees on your guestbook forum. I am a
son of a deceased WW2 Seabee also a WW2 Seabee history buff. Your
forum does provide a great service.
Regards,
John Ratomski
Thanks John,
We appreciate the photos you've provided for the "Flashbacks" page, and are
glad to hear that this page has helped to reunite Seabee friends.

Subject: Question
I have a question that
maybe you could answer or lead me to someone that could. My cousin was in the
Seabees and I recall seeing him at Little Creek, VA, at the Amphibious Warfare
Training Facility in approximately 1963 or 1964, during the summer, probably
June or July. I know it wasn't 1962 because I was in Viegues, PR that year. His
name is Joseph (Joe) Carrappa. He would have been an E-4 or E-5.
He disputes being there, but when you run into a 1st
cousin that you weren't even aware that he was in the service, you don't forget
that experience. I was in the Marine Corps, which was my reason for being
at that location. He said he was with MCB4. Is there anyway that I
can find out if that unit was there at that time?
Thanks.

Le from September to October before going to Quang Tri. You were shown as being
in Detail Foxtrot as RD Coop. I believe that would have put your departure to

My Father is a retired Chief. Enlisted in 1954. In 1956, I was born in Puerto

on or about 1959. All the parties departed together on a ship to California. The
Sea-bee base in Port Hueneme is where I lived when age 4-5, then we moved to
what is now the Oxnard Harbor area. I was able to visit it recently and see the
welcome home signs for the Seabees! What does a Sea Bee do in Vietnam? They
bring the comforts of showers! Build emergency runways and more. Proud of you
all~ In 1972-74, I had the opportunity to live on Adak and graduate early from
High School. What a place~ SEABEES CAN DO! THEIR DAUGHTERS CAN TOO.

I am trying to locate any information about my father

According to his picture, his patch showed that he was a Navy 3rd class
petty officer, carpenter's mate. My
son spoke to a friend of his who is a Lt. Commander stationed at Pearl and the
friend pulled his file. He could not
give us any info because the file had been redacted.
Can you tell me why? My

Fred,
The place I would
start would be at The National Archives and Records Administration as they keep
all military records:

You can also go to NAVY.MIL for

But then you probably already
know about that site, judging by your e-mail address.
Not much help here.
Maybe someone else on this

I was drafted in 1954; had 13 weeks training deployed to GUAM in 1955 served
there 18 months under an experiment, then deployed to PHILLIPINES. Served
from 1957-1958 from there to Midway, Wake, Kwajalein, Hawaii; then back to San
Diego then 3 months in a retraining camp to get used to civilian life. We
worked with the people of Califorinia fighting forrest fires and anything they
needed so we could get use to civilian life and try to blend in with the
community and normal life. Lots of things I dont like to remember and have

He died on Wednesday December 8th, 2010 and with his death leaves only one man
from his platoon left living. He was a great man and he always spoke
highly of the Seabee honor. I just thought that it should be known about
his passing and that he thought highly of all veterans and in his last 6 years
he assisted veterans at the veteran center in west Virginia.
Thank you for your time and for your services to our country.

beautiful Camp Carrol. As many others have previously stated, we were giving the
experience of a lifetime. Where else could a young guy gain experience like
this. Attending "A" and "B" schools were a benefit for me during all my working
life. I would not trade it for anything. Welcome home Seabees!

I was a Personnelman 3rd class, deployed twice to Vietnam with MCB4, first
time to Camp Hoover at Hill 327 a stone's throw from Danang Airbase. Second tour
began when I accompanied Alpha Co on advanced party in Feb 68, within 72 hours
of Tet had landed at Phu Bai, artillery base hammering Hue City a few miles
away. I worked mostly as battalion courier/mailman/test giver, and itinerant
laborer wherever I stopped overnight. Flew into Khe Sanh twice to our detachment
there during 1st deployment in 67, got fogged, rained, in, the airstrip was
ripped up by mortars, so stayed a couple of weeks, got exposed to rabid dog
along with 2 or 3 hundred other Seabees and Marines who played with the cute
little black dog. Our battalion's C Company built the Liberty Bridge, the single
biggest construction project of the Vietnam war. See our H Company salon on
FaceBook.

Hello, I joined the Navy Seabee's in 1968. I lived in Delano, Minn. at the

completed a tour in Okinawa, rebuilding Camp Kinser for the first large Marine
pull-down of troops out of V.N. I was a IPO based on my background with heavy
equipment. I joined the Navy Seabee's to help my Country win in Vietnam.
I never received orders to serve in V.N. however, I believe I contributed to the
over all effort. I was a Proud Navy SeaBee, and still am Proud of serving my

Was attached to MCB10 Sep 1963-Jan 1966. Joined the main body (after
steelworker school) at Sangley Point PI working on dependent housing. I was
painting window louvers and later caulking all of the Builders errors. Stayed on
with the delayed party. Loved that Sam Miguel. Back to Port Hueneme then Guam.
Shipped out to detachment on Midway Island for duration of deployment working on
Brig and gymnasium. Back to Hueneme and training on operation Silverlance at
Camp Pendelton. Went to Okinawa as ready battalion and soon to Chu Lai working 4
on and 8 off laying the runway matting. I never seen so much sand. After walking
in this stuff everyday the saying was "You could kick an elephant in the ass and
knock him down". The day I was to leave for discharge in August 1965 I had my
bags packed and went to pickup my orders for departure. No dice. The official
word had just arrived of a 4 month extension. What a shocker! Anyway I finally
got discharged from Port Hueneme in Jan 1966. Had a great time seeing the world.

Hello,
My name is Rachel Gilner and I’m the Veteran Liaison for PleuralMesothelioma.com.
While I was browsing through a number of Veterans sites I came across your
website and was very impressed by the information you have listed.
Countless veterans are currently suffering from life-threatening illnesses
that are a result of exposure to asbestos, a material that was commonly used in
hundreds of military applications, products, and ships primarily because of its
resistance to fire. Unfortunately, asbestos-related diseases are not always
recognized by the VA, which is why we’ve dedicated a portion of our website with
information that can assist those affected by asbestos-related diseases in order
to help them file for VA benefits.
My grandfather was a staff sergeant in the American Embassies year all over
the world, so I am extremely passionate about spreading awareness to our
country’s leaders. Because so many veterans visit your site, I thought that you
may be interested in helping to educate our nation’s veterans about the dangers
of asbestos exposure by linking to our website from your resources page at
http://www.mnseabees.org/links.htm.
I'm available by e-mail at
rgilner@pleuralmesothelioma.com. With your help, we
can save some lives. Thanks again.
Best Regards,
Rachel Gilner

My uncle, Kenneth A. Butterfield was on Guam and was lost in the tsunami
that occurred when the war was declared over. August, 1945. I was a little girl
and was so effected by the loss that it inspired me to a lifelong interest in
the war and all its connections. I taught English for many years but always
leaned toward literature of that era.
Is there anyone out there who knew "Uncle Ken." His wife and daughter have
died and I am interested to find out more about his last efforts before that
tragic end for him and the men who worked with him.
Sincerely ~~ Fay Gillis

My father James Allen (Bud) was a Seabee with the 25th Spec. NCB in New

Seaman First Class regarding what it meant to be a Seabee in the 25th Special
Battalion. It starts with: Gather round a little closer, While I relate to
you, About the 25th Special Battalion, So help me God, it's true. We don't
claim to be hero's, or even hope to be..........I would gladly copy this for
anyone interested. It was among my father's paper's he had tucked away. I
also have many photo's.

Good to see a number of mcb10 people signing the guest book there are some
familiar names. I was in 10 "64 thru "67. I will be in port hueneme for Seabee

I joined the Navy in February of 1964, received orders to Port Hueneme Naval
Schools Construction after boot camp in San Diego. After graduating from
Construction Electrician "A" School at Hueneme I received orders to MCB TEN. I
was with TEN until early 1967, serving in Chu Lai and Da Nang Vietnam. My last
year I was assigned "shore duty" as a brig-chaser at the brig in Port Hueneme.

My Dad, Earl F. Stephenson served in the 133rd Seabees at Iwo Jima. I have
his copy of the "Rainmaker's Log". If anyone wishes, I would be happy to look in
the "Log" for information for them. There are many, many photos of the 133rd
from the start at Camp Perry, to Camp Endicott, to Gulfport, to Port Hueneme, to
Hawaii and on to Iwo Jima and Guam. I also have Dad's personal scrapbook with
pages and pages of photos, although personal names aren't included.
I do have a question: What is happening about the Presidential Citation that
wasn't awarded. I understand there are those who are trying to get this Citation
awarded as I write. Thank You

I was pleased to venture upon such a note worthy web site honoring the Seabees. This division of the Navy and its purpose is relatively unknown to most folks. I'm honored to have served two tours during 1968-70 with NMCB-5 out of Port Hueneme, California as a equipment operator. NMCB-5 was based in Da Nang during our first tour. The second tour was in Ben Hoa further south near Saigon. The whole experience was one that I will never forget. One only has to serve in any branch of the military to understand what a great country we live in and serve. Even more memorable are the men and women who we served with that gave
their lives. God Bless this great nation.

My grandfather, Harry Mott was a Seabee in the Pacific during WWII. He was in the 25th Special CB unit on New Guinea from 1944 - 1945. He lied about his age to go into the service. He said that he was younger than he was. He had 5 kids and a wife and wanted to help the war effort.
My Dad is trying to identify a ribbon that was on his Dad's uniform.
It is blue stripe, small whit stripe, larger redstripe, either a yellow or white stripe, larger red stripe, white stripe and a blue stripe.
The center white line may have yellowed with age. What is this for? I can't find it in any reference sites to ribbons and insignia. Dad really is hoping to learn what it is for.
My Dad served in the Coast Guard, Navy and finally retired from the Army - so knowing what this was for, would mean a great deal to him. His Dad died in 1964 after a long career as a newspaperman.

Just testing the new guestbook.
When we moved to our own domain we also set up our own guestbook rather than use
an advertising funded public guestbook. This should work much better.
Please let us know what you think of the Web site, general Seabee related
comments, or information about your service. You may also enter
information about service friends you are trying to contact and hopefully they,
another friend, or a relative will see your request. "Once a Seabee,
